How to Dress Downton Abbey Style - 1930's Tutorial

Hope everyone had a wonderful Valentines!
This year, Jamie and I were asked to sing a few love songs for a Valentines Banquet...we decided to go all out and dress up in 1930's outfits and sing Big Band tunes.

With a Downton Abbey craze sweeping the nation (me included), we thought it would be fun to give everyone an inside look at how we put our outfits together.
So, here's our take on Lady Mary and Matthew in the World of Downton Abbey.

DRESS: Perhaps the Most important is the dress After much searching, I found this Grey Chiffon, Evening Gown for $40 online. It laces up the back for a great fit! Loved it!  Click HERE to BUY THIS ITEM

LONG BLACK GLOVES: The ones I found were extra long black satin gloves. Click HERE to BUY THIS ITEM

BLACK BOA: The Black Feather Boa added a special touch to the look. Click HERE to BUY THIS ITEM

HEAD BAND: I bought a double black headband and added rhinestones to it. However, this link is for a headband with the rhinestones already attached. Click HERE to BUY THIS ITEM

BLACK BEAD NECKLACE: Since the dress already had beading on the waste and sleeve I kept my necklace to a choker style. Probably more true to 1930's form would have been wearing them in a long string instead of a choker. Click HERE to BUY THIS ITEM

HAIR: I rolled my hair up in HOT ROLLERS and let them cool all the way before unrolling them. (I don't think I could survive without my Hair it). Once you unroll your hair DON'T separate the curls with your fingers but leave them in big curls. Place the headband on your head and secure with bobby pins. Start in the front and take each individual curl and wind it back up and pin it to the side of your head. (the 1930's look covers the ears, and is close to the face on the sides). Pull up each back curl and pin to top and back of head.

MAKEUP: I decided on a more dramatic look for this outfit. Whatever you decide, RED LIPSTICK is a must!

TIPS & TRICKS: Pin your boa to your gloves. Since I was going to be singing and moving around a lot, I didn't want to have to worry about my boa sliding off. I wrapped it around me and pinned it to the top side of my gloves

FEDORA: This Black Polyester/Wool Fedora "topped off" the Outfit. Click HERE to BUY THIS ITEM

BLACK SUSPENDERS: These black suspenders were a classic touch. Click HERE to BUY THIS ITEM

BLACK SKINNY TIE: The skinny tie pulls the outfit together. Click HERE to BUY THIS ITEM

WHITE SHIRT: A white, long sleeve, button down shirt is a must. Click HERE to BUY THIS ITEM

BLACK DRESS PANTS: The black dress pants always look classy. Click HERE to BUY THIS ITEM

BLACK DRESS SHOES: Some kind of black dress shoe is a must. Click HERE to BUY THIS ITEM

I hope you have as much fun as we did creating and wearing these outfits!

And just for fun...

DIY Burlap 4 Seasons Wreath

Happy New Year!
It's always sad when Christmas is over and all the pretty decorations come down and everything looks a little blah. So, this year I created a beautiful, yet simple wreath that can stand alone, or with a few seasonal fillers can be used to celebrate all 4 seasons!

Here are the supplies you will need:
(2). Burlap
(3). Floral picks
(4). Paint
(5). Scissors
(6). Hot Glue Gun
Begin by creating a leaf pattern on a piece of cardboard or something stiff. trace the pattern onto the burlap fabric.
Before you cut out the leaves, take your hot glue gun and run a bead of glue around the inside edge of each leaf. This will ensure that the burlap wont unravel after you cut them.
Cut, cut, cut. Cut out all the burlap leaves with a scissors.
Next comes the fun part because you can get as creative as you want with the colors of your leaves when painting. A firm "stencil" brush works great when painting burlap by hand. Lay the leaves on a sheet of wax paper and paint away.
Here are the craft paints that I used to create my wreath. All are from Apple Barrel.
                      20755-Vineyard Green        20756-English Ivy Green         20526-Country Gray

Let the leaves dry on the sheet of wax paper.
For some of the darker colors I used Rust-Oleum's Hammered Spray paint. If you want to add some sparkle to a few of the leaves, a top coat of Spray Glitter works great.
If you use a combination of natural colors it is easy to adapt it to any season when adding filler later on.
Next, I broke my floral picks into thirds (about the size of a toothpick), and placed one end at the base of a dried leaf. Place a drop of glue at the base of the leaf and fold over the floral pick. Once the glue is dry, insert it into the wreath base. Repeat until the wreath reaches the desired fullness.
Here are three different wreathes all using the green leaves as a base and adding the bronze, grey, brown and silver leaves in different amounts.

This wreath can be used throughout the year simply by adding seasonal filler.
Here are a few "filler" ideas for the 4 seasons.
Light colored ribbon

Large colorful flowers
Large white Flowers

Colorful leaves
Rust colored berries
Orange ribbon

Red Holly Berries
Silver ribbon
Red Bows

Hope you are blessed in this New Year!
